Battle of Shiloh:The battle of Shiloh took place the morning of April 6th, 1862. The battle was started by confederatesoldiers led by General Albert Sidney Johnston who struck a line of union soldiers on Pittsburgh's Landing near the Tennessee river. By the afternoon the federal soldiers had established something called a "hornet's nest" which was unable to be destroyed by rebel attacks but mass artilary changed the situation and soon most of the union troops were captured or killed. During the first day Johnston was killed and was replaced with P.G.T. Beauregard. The next morning the Federal army was larger due to reinforcements and the total number of men was 40,000 compared to the confederate army of 30,000. Ulysses S. Grant led the federal army and his April 7th counter offenses weakened the Confederate army so much that Beauregard's army had to retire from the field. Although the battle of Shiloh was only 2 days long, it was the bloodiest battle of it's time, resulting in 23,000 casualties. (Civil War Trust)
