King George's War 1744-1748)
Background:King George's war was the third war out of four that make up the French and Indian wars. In 1740 Charles VI, the emperor of Austria died leaving no male heirs to run the throne. Many people in line for the throne including his daughter Maria Theresa fought for his place as emperor which caused war to break out. (King George's War) War involved almost every European Nation. Although France and England did not declare war on each other until 1744, when King George's war officially started, they were on opposite sides during this time of war. King George's war was the American phase of war of Austrian Succession. (Britannica)

Groups Brought Into ConflictThe groups brought into King George's War were mainly Great Britain and France, along with their Indian allies. It consisted of the struggle for power of the New World between the countries. (Britannica)
Louisburg:The main thing that happened during the third war of the French and Indian war was the capture of Fort Louisburg located in Cape Breton Island by Great Britain. The huge fortress took 6 million dollars and 2 years to build. It consisted of walls 20-30 feet high, was 2.5 miles in circumference, and cannons surrounding the entire building. It was seen as the "pride of the French heart in America." Although it was said to be impermeable the British successfully captured and continued to hold power of the fort until 1748 when the treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle was signed by both parties to stop the war due to expenses and losses from both countries. (History of USA)
This is what the recreated Louisburg fortress located in Canada looks like today
Consequences:Although the countries made peace with each other they still were not completely satsified and had tension to do with trading. England was also unhappy because of the loss of control of Louisburg that they had been forced to return to French after signing the Aix-la-Chapelle (History of USA) The tensions between England and French continued to increase. (Brinkley, 94)
How it Contributed to American Identity:The Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle made it so that the territory of the countries before the war was restored. Making it so England lost Louisburg which they had fought so hard to win. This made England realize that a country overseas could not successfully govern them and made them want their own system of government separate from England. (Random Acts)
